That Black Film in the Ports Can Kill a Hummingbird

Moldy bottle feeder port next to the saucer feeder's clean port being scrubbed with the included brush

Sugar water hanging in the sun goes bad fast. In hot weather it can turn in two or three days, and the dark film in the ports isn't dirt. It's mold.

Bird rehabilitators warn that a hummingbird feeding at a moldy port can pick up a fungal infection of the tongue. The tongue swells, the bird can't draw nectar anymore, and it starves at a full feeder.

Here's the catch. In a bottle feeder, the mold grows where the brush can't reach. So you rinse it, hang it back up, and the black film comes back. A feeder you can't open is a feeder you stop cleaning.

  • The lid lifts right off, nothing to unscrew
  • An open bowl you wash like a cereal bowl, brush included
  • Top-rack dishwasher safe when you want the easy way out

Why the Pretty Feeder Sits Empty

Matt 6:26 saucer hummingbird feeder

You spend real money on a pretty glass bottle feeder. You hang it where you can see it from the kitchen window. Then you wait.

One or two birds show up. Sometimes none. Then a plain red dish feeder goes up next to it, and the birds switch over within a day.

Part of it is the drip. A bottle hangs upside down, so the nectar is always pressing on the ports. A warm afternoon pushes it out, the sticky trail brings the bees, wasps and ants, and the hummingbirds move on.

  • A bright red lid reads from across the yard
  • Five flower ports and a perch ring all the way around
  • The nectar sits flat below the ports, so no drip and no sticky trail

Built for the Birds and the Person Who Fills It

Lift-off lid, no-drip saucer, built-in ant moat, and a bright red the birds can't miss.

More hummingbirds at the window. Less scrubbing at the sink.

Lid Lifts Off for a Real Scrub

No threads and no narrow neck. Pop the lid, wash it like a bowl with the brush in the box, or put it in the top rack of the dishwasher.

Matt 6:26 saucer hummingbird feeder

Sturdy Plastic, No Glass to Break

Thick BPA-free plastic that holds its shape outside, season after season. Nothing to shatter the first time it knocks against the hook.

Matt 6:26 saucer hummingbird feeder

Bee-Proof Flower Ports

Each port is tiny and the nectar sits well below it. A hummingbird's tongue reaches it. A bee's can't, so they hover at the edge and give up.

Matt 6:26 saucer hummingbird feeder

Bright Red With a 360° Perch

Hummingbirds home in on red, and the perch ring goes all the way around, so they sit and drink instead of flashing past.

Matt 6:26 saucer hummingbird feeder

Fills From the Top, No Flipping

Lift the lid and pour. No turning a full bottle upside down, and the clear bowl shows the nectar level from the kitchen window.

Matt 6:26 saucer hummingbird feeder

Built-In Ant Moat

A cup of plain water in the center stops ants before they reach the nectar. Top it up every time you refill, so it never runs dry.

Easiest feeder EVER!!

OMG. Where has this feeder been my whole life?! I used to use those ones that you have to unclip and turn to open the feeding part and it was so darn hard, plus they always leaked! This was so easy to put together. Unbelievable. I put them up and I had hummingbirds in less than 5 minutes. I highly recommend!!

Old feeder versus this feeder

The bees and yellow jackets leave these alone, unlike my other hummingbird feeders as you can see in the picture. My old feeder is covered in bees. The new feeders aren't.

Easiest feeder I’ve ever cleaned. So simple.

Hummies love these. I have 2. The last feeders I had were the same shape and size, but the top screwed on and off. On these, the top is a fitted lid, and just lifts off. I was surprised by how much easier and faster it was to clean and fill. Less than 5 minutes from taking them in house to bring cleaned, filled, and rehung. There’s an ant moat as well. Would buy these over the others any day.

Hummers prefer these feeders.

Easy to fill and clean. It's not only my favorite feeder but the hummers as well. I have glass bottle feeders out and they gravitate to these first. Initially, I bought two feeders and the were such a hit that five days later, I ordered two more.

And watch your hummingbirds find it fast, perch longer, and keep coming back.

Avian veterinarian holding the saucer hummingbird feeder in his clinic

“Most of the sick hummingbirds I treat in late summer trace back to one thing: a dirty feeder. Mold builds up inside bottle necks nobody can reach, and it causes a fungal infection that swells the tongue until the bird can't feed. A dish feeder opens like a bowl, so every surface gets scrubbed. It's the kind I tell my clients to buy.”

Wildlife rehabilitator holding the saucer hummingbird feeder at a rehab center

“Every season we take in hummingbirds that were weakened by spoiled nectar or chased off by wasps. What I want people to hang is simple: bright red, a perch the birds can sit on, ports too small for a bee, and nectar that doesn't drip. This feeder checks every box, and it's the one I hang outside our own center.”

Daniel Rivera

Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator

Ornithologist holding the saucer hummingbird feeder in a garden

“I've watched thousands of hummingbirds at feeders over the years, and they keep choosing the flat red dishes over the fancy glass bottles. The ring perch lets several birds sit and drink at once instead of chasing each other off, and you can see every one of them from the window. Hang it near flowers and expect your first visitor the same day.”

“This is my first time in buying a hummingbird feeder. After a thorough research between vertical bottle and dish type feeders, I finally decided to buy this one since it was easy to clean, leak proof and with ant guard. As soon as I kept it in my balcony, 2 hummingbirds came and started consuming the nectar. Those tiny cute birds can easily sit on the ring and enjoy their meal.”

Any Questions We Haven't Answered?

Will hummingbirds actually come to it?

Hummingbirds home in on bright red, and this one has a red lid, five flower ports, and a perch ring all the way around. Most people see their first visitor the same day.

And if the birds pass it by, our 99-day money back guarantee has you covered.

Does it keep bees and wasps away?

Yes. The nectar sits well below each flower port, so a hummingbird's long tongue reaches it and a bee's doesn't. The saucer doesn't drip either, so there's no sticky trail on the outside to draw them in.

What about ants?

The ant moat is built into the center of the lid. Fill it with plain water when you refill the nectar. Ants won't swim, so they stop at the edge.

How do I clean it?

Lift off the lid and wash both parts with warm soapy water. Use the included brush for the flower ports, rinse, and let it dry. It takes about two minutes.

How often should I change the nectar?

Every two to three days in hot weather, and about once a week when it's cool. If it looks cloudy or smells sour, change it right away.

What nectar should I use?

One part plain white sugar to four parts water. Stir until it dissolves and let it cool before you pour it in. No red dye and no honey.

Can I pour in warm nectar?

No. Let homemade nectar cool to room temperature first. Hot liquid can warp the plastic.

Is it dishwasher safe?

Yes, on the top rack. Hand washing with warm soapy water works just as well and only takes a couple of minutes.

Will it leak?

No. A saucer feeder keeps the nectar lying flat below the ports, so there's no upside-down bottle pushing it out. Hang it level and it stays put, even in the wind.

99-Day Money Back Guarantee

Use it for up to 99 days. If you're not happy, you get your money back, no questions asked.

Lifetime Warranty

If any part breaks under normal use, we replace it free for the life of the feeder. Send us a photo and a quick email and we'll take care of it.
